Slackening is caused by three mechanisms, namely settlement, creep, and relaxation. This non-rotational loosening of bolts results in a loss of tension that is usually not visually discernible by someone just looking at the bolt. What is important with Slackening is that it usually also entails the permanent deformation of the clamped material due to the increased stress that the joint experiences. In general, bolted joints will revert to their original shape once the stress is gone, but depending on the material that might not always be the case and instead, the bolts might be permanently deformed.

Settlements have to do with the surface roughness and irregularities of the material you are using. The pressure applied on the clamped surfaces after the pre-loading could lead to deformation or irregularities being flattened. The result of that flattening is that the preload will decrease leaving the bolt looser than it had originally been.
Creep refers to the permanent deformation that occurs on the joint after long-term exposure to high-stress levels. The strength of the materials used for the joint could be important, especially in applications where the material will need to sustain high temperatures. Preventing spontaneous bolt loosening means that the slip between the two parts will need to be minimized as much as possible. There are a few different ways in which this can be achieved.

The second would be to increase the friction between the two parts that is the bolt and the thread. Glue and adhesive can be used as a means of increasing the friction, however, this solution is not one that should be used if you have plans to disassemble the nuts and bolts in place. There is also another problem caused by the increase in friction between threads and that is that the preload at specific torque levels will be much harder to achieve. This is why this method is not commonly employed. Instead, a locking wire or some other similar mechanism that can help reduce rotational loosening is used. These types of mechanisms are far easier to remove and do not have the negative effects that come with using glue.

There is also a third way of preventing spontaneous bolt loosening which requires a decrease in the cyclic loading. Depending on the application you are using your bolts for you might not always be in a position where cyclic loading can be reduced.

Unsurprisingly preventing slackening often requires the same moves used when trying to prevent spontaneous bolt loosening. Namely, focusing on increasing friction so that the composites or polymers can become more compact and thus less likely to become deformed due to temperature, irregularities, or stress.
One of the first methods you can try to prevent slackening is to apply locking glue onto your fastener’s threads before tightening. This will help hold more of the tension. Alternatively, sewing thread can also be used to increase the friction in the tightened fastener.
