What Does Turkey’s Changing Automotive Market Mean For Fastener Sourcing?
Sep 09, 2026
Turkey's automotive market is showing mixed signals in 2026. Domestic passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales declined in August, while automotive exports remained substantial and the supply industry continued to account for a significant share of export value.
For OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers operating in Turkey, this creates a different sourcing environment. When production volumes, export demand, and vehicle mix continue to change, fastener purchasing cannot rely on unit price alone. Supplier capacity, quality consistency, lead-time reliability, and engineering responsiveness become increasingly important.

Turkey's Automotive Market Is Changing
According to the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), Turkey's passenger car and light commercial vehicle market reached 81,031 units in August 2026, down 20.28% compared with the same month last year. Passenger car sales declined 25.16%, while light commercial vehicle sales increased slightly by 0.34%.
Despite the decline, August sales remained 4.4% above the average level for the same month over the previous five years. The data therefore points to a market adjustment rather than a complete collapse in automotive demand.
For automotive suppliers, the more important question is how these changes affect production programs and component sourcing.
Turkey remains closely connected to international automotive manufacturing. According to the Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters' Association (OIB), Turkey's automotive exports reached $2.791 billion in August 2026, while exports during the first eight months of the year exceeded $27.2 billion.
The automotive supply industry accounted for $10.677 billion of exports during January–August, representing 39.2% of Turkey's total automotive exports.
This means that changes in domestic vehicle sales do not tell the whole story for companies supplying Turkey's automotive industry.

Automotive Suppliers Are Facing More Flexible Production Needs
When production volumes or vehicle programs change, component requirements can change with them.
OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers may need to adjust quantities, introduce new components, modify existing designs, or support different assembly conditions. For custom fasteners, these changes can affect dimensions, thread configurations, head designs, material grades, surface treatments, and other technical requirements.
If the joint design or assembly process changes, a fastener that works for one application may not work for another.
This is where supplier flexibility becomes important. Instead of simply supplying a component against an existing specification, a capable custom fastener supplier should be able to review the application, identify potential manufacturing issues, and support the development process when requirements change.
For automotive manufacturers, this can help reduce the time and risk involved in adapting components to new production requirements.
Why Custom Fasteners Can Help OEMs Solve Production Challenges
Custom fasteners are not simply modified versions of standard products. They are developed around the requirements of a specific application.
For example, an automotive application may require a particular thread length to achieve sufficient engagement, a specific head geometry to accommodate restricted assembly space, or a surface treatment that balances corrosion resistance with the required torque behavior.
These requirements are difficult to address when component selection is limited to existing specifications.
Early engineering involvement can help identify potential issues before mass production. A supplier can review drawings, manufacturing tolerances, material requirements, thread configurations, and surface treatments before production begins.
AYA supports drawing-based custom fastener development for automotive applications, including customized dimensions, materials, strength grades, head configurations, and surface treatments. Its automotive fastener solutions cover diameters from 3–30 mm and strength grades from 4.8 to 14.9.
What Should Turkish OEMs Check When Choosing a Custom Fastener Supplier?
Choosing a custom fastener supplier requires more than checking whether a supplier can manufacture the required shape.
For an automotive program, buyers should consider whether the supplier can support the entire development and production process.
| Supplier capability |
Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Drawing-based development | Helps translate application requirements into manufacturable designs |
| Engineering support | Allows potential design and production issues to be identified earlier |
| Material and coating control | Helps maintain required mechanical and surface performance |
| Production consistency | Supports stable quality across repeated batches |
| Quality testing | Helps verify dimensional and mechanical requirements |
| Delivery capability | Reduces the risk of component shortages affecting production |
For Turkish OEM and Tier 1 buyers, these capabilities can be especially important when production requirements change or a component needs to be developed for a new application.
A More Flexible Approach to Automotive Fastener Sourcing
Turkey's automotive market is changing, but it remains an important manufacturing and supply base for international automotive programs. The latest export data also shows that the automotive supply industry continues to represent a substantial part of Turkey's automotive business.
This creates an environment where flexibility, engineering support, and supply reliability can matter as much as the initial component price.
Custom fasteners offer a practical way to meet application-specific requirements when existing specifications cannot fully meet the needs of an automotive assembly.
AYA works with customers from drawing review and DFM evaluation through production and quality control, supporting customized fasteners for demanding automotive applications.
If you are developing a new automotive component or reviewing an existing fastening solution, share your drawings, specifications, or application requirements with AYA to discuss a custom fastener solution for your program.
